Breast Cancer: Is it in the Genes?
Gene make up is said to have implications for breast cancer. In fact, research conducted at Duke University has triggered the medical community to take a closer look at more individualized therapy for cancer patients.
According to reports published by the American Medical Association in April 2008, Dr. Anil Potti and a team of researchers at Duke University examined National Institutes of Health information involving 964 breast cancer patients to view clinical and genomic factors associated with breast cancer. Through this research, the team was able to identify that prognosis was linked to gene composition.
Poor prognosis was identified in gene profiles denoting a cancer associated pathway, including, wound healing, invasiveness, chromosomal instability and deregulation. Relapse time among individuals who did not have this gene composition was sixteen months more than those with this gene profile.
There was also unique composition noted in patients who had received chemotherapy. The researchers concluded that early breast cancer treatment may be improved through targeted molecular therapy that is individualized, with consideration to gene profiling.
