Infections Common and Costly After Implants

According to new reports, infections in patients who have undergone implant surgery, particularly due to cancer, are common.

The cost of treating such infections can reportedly also be very high, say researchers.

Cancer Patient Statistics

Statistics show that one in eight women who have undergone a mastectomy and then opt for reconstructive surgery are likely to develop an infection within one month of the procedure.

The data suggests that it makes sense, financially, for hospitals to add and enhance their computer systems so that infections can be better prevented.

Steps such as giving antibiotics before surgery, controlling blood sugar levels, and forcing medical employees to wash their hands consistently are also suggested by lead researcher, Margaret Olsen form the Washington University School of Medicine.

“Preventing infections is extremely important no matter what, but this is looking at whether it’s cost effective,” explains Olsen. “Because these infections are expensive, the answer is clearly, yes.”

Study Conducted

In a study regarding infections and implants, researchers analyzed 949 women who were admitted to the hospital for a mastectomy or breast reconstruction.

About 50 of the women supposedly developed infections shortly after their surgery at the site where it was conducted.
