Maintenance Encouraged for Breast Implants
March 6 , 2008 -
Breast augmentation surgery has become increasingly popular in the past few years nationwide due to the media and a general acceptance of cosmetic surgery.
However, doctors are still encouraging patients not to take the surgery lightly and completely understand the side effects, results, and maintenance that needs to be done before having the procedure.
Where Breast Augmentation is Done
According to the Mayo Clinic, there are three separate incision areas in the body where breast implants can be inserted.
The incision can occur in the breast fold, around the nipple, or under the arm.
Though it’s important to realize that no matter where the incision is made, breast surgery typically involves the following:
- Soreness after surgery
- Stitches
- Scarring
What to do After Surgery
Dr. Greg Wiener, who is a board certified surgeon at Resurrection Hospital, says that there are always risks included in surgery and therefore patients should be well educated on what to do before and after the procedure.
To maintain healthy breast, Dr. Wiener suggests:
- Massaging the breast and doing self-examinations
- Wearing a proper fitting bra
- Being careful when dieting
- Not smoking
