Breast Augmentation Revision Surgery - An Easier Approach Second Time Around

July 7, 2008 -

Over the years, it has become apparent that most breast augmentation patients require a second breast augmentation procedure within seven to fifteen years time. In fact, silicone breast augmentation patients are advised to undergo a second breast augmentation procedure within seven to ten years. And the prospect of the second surgery may not be appealing the second time around. Yet, it has become more popular for breast augmentation patients to receive revision surgery with local anesthesia and sedation for great advantages.

Breast augmentation recovery for an initial procedure is typically up to two weeks time. Yet, revision surgery to exchange aged implants can be performed under local anesthesia and sedation which helps make the downtime less time consuming.

In fact, the procedure can often be performed by reopening the original incision, slipping the implant out and replacing the breast pocket with new one in a small amount of time. Finally, local anesthesia and sedation do not pose the same risks that are associated with general anesthesia.

During the breast revision surgery with sedation and local anesthetics, a local anesthetic is injected into the treatment area to numb the area. A local anesthetic is a numbing medication. Sedation will usually be initiated before the local anesthetic. Some plastic surgeons term sedation as twilight sedation because patients may feel partly unconscious and may not notice the procedure going on at the time of surgery or thereafter. The beauty in this combination is that complications are rare and the recovery period is much reduced when compared to general anesthesia. In addition, the cost for local anesthesia and sedation is less than general anesthesia. Though, the local anesthesia and sedation combination is not for everyone. It is important to discuss this option with a board certified plastic surgeon that focuses on revision breast augmentation surgery.
