According to plastic surgeons and to the surprise of many patients, breast implants don’t last forever and a second surgery is often required down the road to maintain the desired effects of the surgery.
Although some advertisements imply that implants are a long-term solution, doctors are coming out to inform the public that, unlike diamonds, implants aren’t forever.
Having a Second Surgery
Reports show that one-third of women who underwent breast augmentation surgery, whether it be for cosmetic reasons or for re-construction after cancer, had to undergo a second operation within four to five years.
Many women are aware of the fact that implants can deteriorate over the years.
However, what they aren’t always informed of is the fact that saline and silicone plants can form minute tears in their rubbery shells, which can cause ruptures.
“Women are used to having their hair or nails done on a regular basis to maintain their appearance,” explains Dr. Mark Jewel, a plastic surgeon in Oregon. “Ultimately, breast implants may also be a matter of maintenance.”
Getting the Right Surgeon
As with any surgery, it’s important to get a board certified surgeon who you can trust and openly communicate with.
Dr. Jewel says he warns his patients that breast augmentation surgery automatically means that a second surgery will be needed at some point in the future.
