Plastic Surgery Benefits for Mastectomy Patients
October 18, 2007 -
For breast cancer patients who need mastectomies, more reconstructive choices are now available and studies show that having surgery can be significantly beneficial. According to statistics, however, few cancer survivors are opting for the beneficial surgeries that are available to them.
The Benefits of Reconstructive Surgery
The principal benefit of reconstructive surgery for recovering cancer patients is that is helps to improve and better their overall quality of life.
The surgery varies from case to case, depending upon each individual's cancer; however, in a mastectomy at least one of the breasts is removed.
Small Amount of Patients Have Surgery
According to Dr. Michael Miller from the Ohio State Medical Center, about 50 percent of mastectomy patients are eligible for follow-up reconstructive surgery.
However, due to a lack of knowledge regarding the safety and benefits of reconstructive surgery, only about 10 percent of these patients actually get surgery.
"Our goal is to integrate reconstructive surgery into the entire treatment plan for the patient; it should not be an afterthought," says Miller.
