According to reports, plastic surgeons are re-evaluating past findings regarding silicone breast implants.
They are also trying to develop new knowledge about the effects of these types of implants.
The Issue of Body Image
In a review of important recent studies conducted on breast implants, researchers found that contrary to what most people believe, women who want to get breast implants don’t suffer from low self-esteem or body image.
‘Breast augmentation patients don’t have a poorer overall self-image, nor are they more self-critical and preoccupied with their appearance than other women,” explains Mary McGrath, ASPS Member Surgeon and the study’s author.
The positive effect of breast augmentation on women’s thoughts and feelings is supposedly limited to their breasts.
Silicone and Cancer
Although some studies have raised questions about whether there is a link between silicone breast implants and breast cancer, other studies have raised concerns about silicone causing other types of cancer.
Cervical, vulvar and lung cancer have been associated with silicone implants.
“At present, there is no convincing evidence that breast implants alter the risk of cancer,” says Louise Brinton, an author the study.
