Breast augmentation and other plastic surgery procedures gaining popularity with the 65 and older age group.
There are statistics showing the number of cosmetic surgery patients has grown more than 352% in the past five years in the 65 years and older age group according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. ABC reported on one 80-year old woman who went in for a breast augmentation, face-lift, eyelift, lip enlargement, and chemical peel. While the surgeon who performed the plastic surgery procedure on the woman has never performed a breast augmentation on someone at that age, it is believed that this trend will continue in the future.

But conducting plastic surgery on older patients must be conducted with precaution. Many patients that are over 65 have medical problems, including high blood pressure and coronary artery diseases that younger patients do not have.

It is extremely important to consider the patient’s risk for complication, and some plastic surgeons feel that it should only be performed in patients with low risk because it is an elective surgical decision. A University of Illinois College of Medicine doctor, Dr. J. Regan Thomas feels that “there may be greater likelihood that patients in older age groups may have systemic illnesses or conditions that put them at greater risk from surgery, such as diabetes or hypertension.” Older patients take longer to heal and have a decreased result satisfaction because their skin lacks elasticity that is used to recover from surgery quickly. The importance of having a board certified plastic surgeon with older generations becomes vital to the safety and well being of the patient. (ABC News, 1-31-02)
