Risks
and Benefits of Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation Risks
Anyone with breast implants should see a plastic surgeon
once a year for an examination.
-Dr. James Baker, University of South
Florida clinical professor of plastic surgery (MSNBC.com, 6-14-01).
There are risks involved with every surgical procedure inclusive
of plastic surgery. Many breast augmentation risks can be avoided
by choosing a qualified, board
certified surgeon that is able to detect warning signs, as well
as to effectively treat any unforeseen complications that can occur
with any type of procedure. After the silicone breast implant was
removed by the FDA for further safety studies in 1992, the introduction
of saline implants was made for breast augmentation. In May 2000,
the FDA approved the saline breast implants after finding they were
a safe and effective means of achieving breast augmentations.
- Despite the FDA approval, the risks of any surgical procedure
should be thoroughly investigated and reviewed prior to choosing
to undergo the surgery, and this includes breast augmentation.
The most common risks for a breast augmentation include:
- Deflation
- Detection of breast cancer becomes more difficult
- Capsular contracture
- Calcium deposits
- Infection
- Delay of wound healing
- Neuroma
- Additional surgeries to replace or remove the implant
- Hematoma
- Changes in breast sensation, including the nipple and breast
- Implant shifts
- Bleeding
- Breast Asymmetry
- Excessive scarring
- Reactions to anesthesia
There used to be concern over the link between breast cancer and breast
augmentation, but there has been no direct link found between the
two. However, the placement of the breast implant causes an increased
difficulty in taking and reading a mammogram. It is advised to have
a mammogram taken prior to breast augmentation surgery.
The board certified breast augmentation surgeon will review every potential
risk, as well as any precautions that should be taken before entering
surgery. Our board certified breast augmentation surgeons have been
educated,
trained, and have valuable experience to ensure every patients
safety.
Breast Augmentation Benefits
Breast augmentation carries many risks with the surgical procedure,
but the benefits of breast augmentation can be very satisfying to
women who were unhappy with their current breast size. The breast
augmentation procedure results in larger and fuller breasts that
can drastically improve the self-confidence and self esteem of women
who felt self conscious about their breast size.
